Features of an Optimal Double J Stent Placement Technique

Catheters are used in many urology processes for different operations. There is no universal technique for placing a catheter. Every urologist has his/her technique, but certain features are required to keep in mind while placing a catheter.

  • Use the correct length: it is essential to have a double J stent with an accurate measurement; there are different ways of measuring the ureter length like CT, Retrograde, X-ray but the most precise method to measure the length is directly if possible. A 5–6-inch open-ended catheter is placed into the renal pelvis. A small amount of diluted contrast is injected into the open-end catheter. If the ureteral length matches an odd number, take the catheter, which fits a shorter length. There is sufficient length in the coils which can add up to an extra cm. This is why a longer catheter will impose discomfort for the patient.

  • Rigid catheter: the rigidness of the stents should be chosen according to the requirements. Stiffer catheters are used in processes like strictures, cancer procedures or when a stone has to be passed through a Catheter. The rigid stent prevents compression and helps in better drainage than the softer ones.

  • Correct French size: the standard size of a catheter is about 6 inches; the broader diameter catheters are used to drain out any infections. If you have to use catheters with more French size, you can use two smaller ones instead.

  • Do not cut the safety thread until and unless the procedure is completed. The thread attached to the distal end of the catheter ensures that the stent, pusher and guiding wire remain in place. The thread has to be removed in a manner wherein the position of the catheter is not changed. But it isn't easy to maintain the exact position of the catheter once the thread is removed.
