WHAT IS PERCUTANEOUS NEPHROSTOMY?

Percutaneous Nephrostomy is a practice in Nephrology, wherein a catheter or a small flexible rubber tube in inserted through the skin into the kidney in order to drain urine while using imaging as supervision. This is a procedure used to ease the movement of urine throughout the human body by the decompression of any ureteral obstruction in the renal collection system. The practice of PCN or Percutaneous Nephrostomy is to eliminate kidney stones and to help the urinary tract function normally.



The procedure is safe. This is a procedure also used for tract creation for the provision of inserting devices, the extraction or elimination of stones or for taking tissues for microscopic examination, dilatation of ureteric narrowing, and ureteral stenting. WHAT HAPPENS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE?

A series of tests are conducted namely; blood and urine tests, X-Rays of your kidneys, ureters, and bladder, CT Scans and MRI scans to get a clear understanding of your organs. Cystoscopy and renal nuclear scan to assess the complete urinary system for better understanding.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE?

PCN is performed under general anesthesia and is done under ultrasonography or special X-Ray guidance. Initially, the doctor makes a small incision on the back of the patient, and an IP needle is passed through the skin into the kidney. Special instruments pass-through this needle next. After this, a tube is placed in the kidney and another tube is placed in the ureter to drain urine from the kidney. The surgical spot is dressed and you will be under medical surveillance for 24 hours.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

You will be hospitalized for the next one or two days for in case of any complications or any kind of emergency.

Percutaneous Nephrostomy (PCN) Catheters are used for a temporary diversion associated with urinary obstruction secondary to calculi.
Other common indications include:
  • Diversion of Urine from renal collecting system when healing fistulas or leaks resulting from traumatic or iatrogenic injury, malignant or inflammatory fistulas, or hemorrhagic cystitis,
  • Treatment of no dilated obstructive uropathy,
  • Treatment of complications related to renal transplants,
  • Access to interventions such as direct infusion when dissolving stones, chemotherapy and antibiotic or antifungal therapy,
  • Decompression of nephric or perinephric fluid collections (e.g. urinomas, abscesses).

 The PCN catheter procedure is an interventional procedure used to relieve an obstructed renal collecting system.
The PCN Catheter is used for the temporary or permanent drainage & irrigation of urine from the kidney by direct puncture in presence of distal obstruction.
